The mountain Nebo is 9 km away from Madaba. It is the place, from where Moses saw the promised land after the escape from Egypt. But he never arrived there because of his death. His grave was never found. A spring was named after him. Since 1930 excavations take place, which exposed the Moses-church and one of the biggest monasteries of the near East. The Moses-church was built by the early Christians. The most important mosaic of the basilica shows animals which you can’t find in Jordan today, e.g. lions. The remaining mosaics were dug up and restored and decorate the walls of the modern building, which protects the old stones of the basilica from wind and weather. |
