Parrot-fish - Scaridae

marks: They can grow as long as
120cm. They have a strong body with very big, often
flashly colored scales. Their head is rounded; the mouth,
which is provided with an extremly strong bill-like set
of teeth. With it they can bite off and gring pieces of
coral. They have a long, throught-going back-fin, swin
with the chest-fins and can be recognized easily by their
seesaw swimming. The tail just serves as oar. The name
doesn't come from their bill-like set of teeth, but fom
the many variants of colors. Way of life: Parrotfish are daiy-active fish, which sleep at night. With their strong prickles they cling to cracks or caves or they surrpund themselves with a cover of slime. Among their food is also a lot of crushed coral-rock, which is excreted in a cloud of sand. Parrotfish undergo a number of color-changings, which depends on the on age and sex. Food: coral-polyps, algae or seaweeds. |
